On the evening, 30 th Mar. 2009, Prof. Shan Zhou-yao from school of Chinese, the University of Hong Kong was invited to the Zhouyi Center and give a special lecture on the issue of the original meaning of Chinese characters to the graduate student of Chinese philosophy. Prof. Lin Zhong-jun, Prof. Li Shang-xin attended the seminar.
This lecture is highly professional concerning the original meaning of Chinese character. Prof. Shan defined the original meaning of Chinese character, and then explained the significance of researching on the Chinese character, holding that the original meaning of the Chinese character is the headstream of the extended meaning, so it is helpful for us to master the extended meaning of the Chinese character when we learn the original meaning. Prof. Shan pointed out specially that we ever depended on the Shuowen jiezi (lit., Origin of Chinese Characters by Xu Shen, about 57-147) which could not reflect the original meaning of Chinese character sometimes.
Prof. Shan's lecture informs how to study the Yi with the research of original meaning of Chinese character, and he introduced the hexagram Kui to explain the statements in the way of Chinese philology. Prof. Lin Zhong-jun made a summary speech at the end of the seminar.
