The Book of Changes is one of the oldest Chinese classics. It is a book of divination practice mixed

with profound and peculiar philosophical theory. It is accepted that the book was completed as early as

the Warring States Times, and was elevated to the foremost place among the Han dynasty, entitled “the

head of the ‘Five Classics'. From past to present, there are have been works dealing with the Book of

Changes emerging in a profuse stream, exploring into its author, its times , etc. However, there have

been no final conclusions on these issues.

The Book of Changes is divided into two parts, one termed Jing (the Text)and the other Zhuan (The

Commentaries). The linear signs, judgment to the hexagrams, and the text pertaining to the individual

lines composed the Jing. In Jing, there are 64 guas which are the basic units, every of which is composed

of linear signs, Gua Ci (Judgment to the Hexagram),and Yao Ci (Text Pertaining to the Individual

Lines). The sixty-four double hexagrams are derived by duplicating the eight hexagrams. Each hexagram is

composed by combining three linear signs (Yin—and Yan- -).Two copies with different orders of the

hexagrams are handed down. One is the present in current use, composed of the upper text and the lower

text. The upper text starts with the Qian, and the Kun follows; The lower text ends with Wei Ji. The

other is the version copied on silk unearthed from Mawangdui Han Tombs, Chasha. It starts with the Qian,

followed by the Pi and ended with the Yi. Gua Ci and Yao Ci are the expository words to comment the

symbolic meaning in those hexagrams. They show the emblematic purport and brightly and lively by

composing the common places in everyday life, expressed specifically in writing. Here is the current text

of Gua Ci and Yao Ci for you.
