I. Objectives
1. This faculty aims at training advanced professionals and practical talents with profound philosophical theoretical knowledge, love of their motherland culture, good personalities, diligence, sternness of learning and strong pursuit of their career.
2.It is required that doctoral graduates have extensive, deep-rooted, elaborate and basic knowledge in Chinese philosophy and faculty theory. They should have good command of one foreign language, basic command of second foreign language, familiarity with the situation about domestic and overseas studies in this field and about the tendency of the development in Chinese philosophy. And they should also have independent analytical and creative thinking capabilities. They should be able to do research to complicated problems independently and creatively by employing traditional Chinese academic approach and modern academic approach.

After graduation the doctoral graduates can work as theory advocators and perform practical work in higher education establishments, academic research institutes, government organizations and press publishing houses, etc.

III. Duration of study
Full-time doctoral graduates are required to normally study for three years in length, with the longest time not exceeding five years. For the doctoral graduates at work, the time for study is not allowed to exceed six years. For the master-doctor degree graduates, the time for study is normally five years, with the longest time not exceeding six years.
IV. Total credits
Required credits is 20, of which are compulsory 14 credits and selective 6 credits included.

1.The lectures in the faculty mainly deal with discussions surrounding the latest issues and hot topics in the development of the field. Doctoral graduates should have a good command of the academic tendency of the day in order to actively participate in the study of the latest issues or major problems. The lectures mainly adopt individual lecturing in combination with discussions, with the lecturer presenting his points and followed by discussions. Doctoral graduates are required to attend the lectures for not less than nine times, twice of which as individual lecturer.
2. Assessments
Every three times' participation of a doctoral graduate in the frontier-field lectures is counted one credit whereas one credit is counted as an individual lecturer.
(1) Selective courses
Choosing selective courses or cross-faculty courses is encouraged. One or two courses are allowed to be selected and recorded in the total credits. Second foreign language is counted two credits. For the doctoral graduates whose first foreign language is English, the second foreign language can be used as non-English, they must select second foreign language, normally English.
(2) Supplementary courses
Doctoral graduates with the same-level degree or non-major degree are required to select two post-graduate courses for their studies. The results are recorded in the personal files with no credits.
VI. Mid-term assessments
Our faculty performs mid-term assessment on doctoral graduates which is held in the third term. It is a comprehensive evaluation of the doctoral graduates in the respects of their thought, course study, scientific research ability, thesis preparation and health conditions etc in the written form combined with interview. The credits are rated A (excellence),B(good),C(pass) and D (fail).The failed without master degree is required to write master-degree thesis according to the specific situations.
VII. Scientific research and degree thesis
Doctoral thesis is an important criteria for measuring a doctor's academic level and a faculty's level in cultivating doctors. In writing doctoral thesis, doctoral graduates are required to stand in the frontier of academic development and explore into new realm with bravery by using traditional and modern research approaches from multi-layers and whole dimensions in dealing with all kinds of Chinese philosophical problems. The thesis should be original and of academic value or social value and should be written by the doctoral graduate himself under the guidance of the tutor. And it should be a systematic and complete academic paper which deals with a certain field or topic (not less than 100,000 words).To insure the quality of the paper, the writing time should not be less than two years and for the master-doctor degree students, not less than three years.
Thesis starting report.It is an important step in writing a doctoral thesis, which has direct relations with the value and academic level of the paper. It is advisable that a doctoral graduate consult with his tutor and devise a subject for the thesis and finish the thesis starting report on his own, based on his extensive probes and studies, consulting a large amount of related data and acquaintance with the latest tendency of the current academic development The report is a necessary part of the mid-phase thesis selection and generally proceeds with it. The thesis starting report is an important way that the doctoral graduate reports his writing paper schedule to the guidance group. Only approved by the group can the thesis be written officially; otherwise, the thesis subject should be re-selected within three months with the starting report restarted.
Mid-phase progress report.To guarantee the quality of the paper, the faculty operates the mid-phase examination system for the thesis writing, that is, once every three months to five months the doctoral graduate should report his paper writing to his tutor. At the end of the fifth term the doctoral graduate should give a comprehensive report to the guidance group about his paper writing. And the guidance group should help the doctoral graduate solve his difficulties in writing, provide with study approach to contribute to his smooth writing.
Arrangements and corresponding assessments on the thesis pre-reply. The doctoral thesis pre-reply is held in the first month of the sixth term. It is required that the doctoral graduate present the guidance group a comprehensive statement of his thesis and the guidance group decide whether the doctoral graduate is permitted to perform the thesis reply officially according to his thesis academic level. In the pre-reply, the failure is allowed to postpone the thesis reply. The concrete steps, time and means are decided according to the concerned degree administrative regulations of Shandong University.Before the thesis reply for the doctorate degree, the doctoral graduate should have had an academic paper in his own field published on state class A or class B journals with himself as the first author and Shandong University as the first unit signature.
VIII. Practice
This faculty attaches high attention to training the doctoral practical ability. It is required that the doctoral graduates go for corresponding teaching practice or assist tutors to perform academic research or get involved into tutors' related projects. The time for the teaching activities should not be less than four periods. If assisting the tutors in doing the research, corresponding written materials should be provided and acknowledged by the tutor.

Demand for doctoral thesis
This regulation is applicable to any graduate who applies for Ph.D. degree. The original part of the doctoral thesis should have achievements beforehand. The detail is as follows,
The achievements are shown in the form of at least one academic paper, published on academic publications at state class A or class B, with himself being the first author and Shandong University as the author's unit. The published paper is officially recognized. Achievements in other forms (scientific research award, patent right, etc.) are included.
